PMP Certification Requirements - Eligibility Myths

PMP requirements for the 2022 PMP exam

Two steps are required to obtain the Project Management Professional (PMP), certification. The Project Management Institute (PMI) will require you to complete an application. The online application requires you to provide details about your work history. You can save it and come back to it later if you need. After your submission is received, an employee from the Project Management Institute will examine it.

The average review time for your application is five business days. PMI will send you an email once your application has been approved. An email from PMI will contain an eligibility code. This code is required to pay for the exam and schedule the next part of the PMP certification.

How is the PMP exam administered?
  • The PMP exam, which is computer-based and non-adaptive, has 180 questions. Each question is administered by Pearson Vue, an independent testing administrator. The exam takes approximately four hours. The majority of test-takers complete the exam in a reasonable amount of time. PMI assigns each question a difficulty level. PMI assigns a mix of difficult and simple questions to each question. This determines the number of questions that you must answer correctly. Your exam will be graded within four hours and your scores will be emailed to you. These are your scores:

    • Below Target

    • On Target

    • Above Target

It is possible to receive a below-target score in one area and still pass. However, you will need to offset that below-target score with higher scores in all other areas.

How much does the PMP exam cost?

For PMI members, the exam is $405, but for non-members, it is $555. If you want to be a member of PMI and take the exam, you will save a few dollars - the annual fee is only $139.

What version book should I study for the PMP exam?

Project Management Body of Knowledge, which is a textbook for project management professionals, has been used as the source for exam questions in exams related to project management.

PMP Requirement Myth 1 - I have to be a "project manager"

PMI is short for Project Management Institute, so you should go to its website to find out more about its associated titles.

PMP Requirement Myth 2 - I need a college degree.

Wrong. There are only two eligibility requirements regarding experience – Category 1 and Category 2.

Category 1: Prerequisites

  • Four-year degree

  • 36 months leading and directing projects

  • 35 hours of project management education

Category 2: Prerequisites

  • Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent)

  • 60 months leading and directing projects

  • 35 hours of project management education

Requirement Myth 3 - Audits are scary

Please note that the audit process takes up to a few months, depending on factors such as the number of colleagues mentioned in an application and how much information is provided about them. Even if you complete your application completely or fill out all of the parts, a quick audit may take longer as we need to verify some information from your colleagues. Always be honest and provide accurate information in your application!

If you apply to become a certified project manager, PMI will help make your documents easy to send. They are part of a company with well-established services that can help get your important papers delivered in a timely manner.

Requirement Myth 4 - I need project management training

There is no doubt that 35 contact hours are needed to have a successful career in project management. However, these hours can come from many sources. They can be self-taught, paid for by your employer, or paid for by anyone.
