PMP Certification and Qualification Requirements
I. Project Management Experience
You need to have 3-5 years of experience in leading and directing projects before you can take the PMP exam.
Leading and directing projects means you have experience as a project manager. It may be a project as small as managing a single task, or much larger like managing the entire project.
If you are leading and directing projects, then it is not considered "being a project team member".
Let’s understand this requirement in more detail by looking at the definition of a project.
What is a Project?
A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.
The PMBOK Guide
To meet our experience requirements, you should have worked on one or more projects. The type and size of projects are not important. You can gain experience from any type of project, no matter what the complexity.
Your project could be any number of things. It can be from the technology industry or not; it can be small or large scale, and it can be in-house or customer-focused. It could come from any industry, too.
PM Experience Requirement – Key Takeaways
You should have either 3 years of PM experience or 5 years of PM experience, depending on your education level.
When filling out the application form, list all your projects and the number of hours you worked on each.
The project manager should not count the entire working duration of a project as PM experience. Rather, they should only count those hours that were used to perform PM tasks.
You should have completed tasks from your chosen 3 domains while managing your projects. However, it is not necessary to have included all the tasks in every project you manage.
II. 35 Contact Hours of Formal Project Management Education
You need 35 hours of formal Project Management Certification to qualify for the exam. Let's look at what formal means and what kind of training is required.
What is a Contact Hour?
A contact hour is equal to one hour of classroom instruction. For every 7 hours, 1 contact hour is earned. If a person spends 9 hours long in the training session with 7 hours of learning and 2 hours of break time they will earn 7 contact hours. A contact hour can be earned from an online training workshop too.
What is Formal Education?
There are many different ways to get a formal education, including classroom training, self-learning online training, or instructor-led virtual training.
Self-study or attending PMI chapter meetings is not counted towards contact hours.
The hours of the requirement for pmp certification can be obtained by attending any course that includes instruction on the 10 KA from the PMBOK Guide as well as Agile concepts from the Agile Practice Guide.
PMP Contact Hours Requirement – Key Takeaways
You should have a formal PM Certification of 35 contact hours or more.
You can utilize the hours accrued from multiple training programs that total up to 35 hours.
You could use educational hours from your college programs.
The 35 contact hours are valid for a lifetime.
