PMP is the gold standard in project management. Many companies want their staff to be PMP certified because it’s the best certification in the market.
Part of a Select Few
When a person is looking for talent to fill a position, they want someone who has the qualifications. They tend to be drawn towards PMP certification because it's exclusive, but it takes a lot of experience, knowledge, and motivation to maintain it.
Continual Improvement
Becoming a PMP is a sign of constant development. PMI introduced the talent triangle in 2015 that requires practitioners to learn about three categories: technical project management, leadership, and strategic and business management. Employers can feel more confident when they hire a PMP-certified project manager. Like the projects themselves, becoming a PMP means you are constantly getting better at what you do.
Value Management
According to the PMI’s 2015 salary survey, US-based people with PMP certificates earned a median salary of $111,000. This is considerably more than the $91,000 earned by those without PMP (pg. 12). Yet, this is another example of PMP holders being seen as an investment. Earned value management (EVM) has been part of the PMBOK Guide since its original 1987 edition. EVM combines scope, time, and cost in order to measure project performance.
Global Recognition
PMP is built with global values. To the PMI Certification Handbook, ‘The certification program is driven by […] volunteers [who] represent the diversity of PMI’s market, coming from every region of the world, industry, job level, and experience level.’[1] In other words, PMP was developed with a global standard in mind. Employers with a global reach want global qualifications to achieve success.
Commitment
PMP qualifications require dedication in its maintenance. While many best practice certs indicate talent and knowledge, PMP goes further and demands commitment. It’s important to not overlook the importance of character, which is something employers try to glean from candidates. A certification that requires committed work to maintain shows motivation and engagement. This can make you appear more likely to motivate others.
You can be ranked as a highly experienced project manager and get your PMP certification through training. For less experienced project managers, you can still study the PMBOK Guide and get a PMI certificate. Sign up for CAPM certification training and learn a globally recognized framework.
